Our philosophy: CHANGE THE DRIVE, NOT THE CAR

Welcome to the Dutch company of e-Rovers. We developed an all-in-one electric dual drivetrain, build into unique swap-e-axels. No one has gotten this concept working. We explain everything here in the openness to inform you.

A manufacturer (OEM) only wants to sell new cars and is not interested in converting an existing vehicle. A manufacturer needs all its investable money to bring passenger cars to market electrically. As a result, real rugged 4×4 EVs will remain an underachiever in the coming years. There will be none. And designing a true electric 4×4 costs a lot of money and there is none money for this. We have jumped into this gap with our clever design. We do listen to 4×4 drivers who have sadly continuing to drive on fuel. Highly polluting, consuming, expensive maintenance and increasingly squeezed into crowded areas.

Everything we do to solve our customer’s problem and try to make money with it. In a few years, you won’t be allowed to drive with an internal combustion engine under euro6 anywhere. We solve that problem by making your beloved 4×4 car electric and fit for future generations. Our drive in business is to help saving the World.

Brief explanation of what we came up with: swapping the 2 existing old axles under your car, front and rear, for e-Rovers electric ones. At least 400km/250miles distance (range) per charge. At your local garage this swap-job is done in 3 days. Your fuel engine, gearbox, transfer case, high and low gearbox, the axles with the heavy differentials in it, cooling radiator, the fuel tank and many other parts will not return. All sets are tailor made for your 4×4 car, we supply sets for all brands. Fits in one-go. All removed parts (475kg) can go to the scrapyard and from there to the re-melters to be re-used. No waste. We tackle it at the core.

We will go beyond just converting the older and existing 4×4 to electric. We will also convert all yet-to-be-built fuel 4×4 cars in the future. And mild-hybrids too. From years of construction approx. 1965 up to 2050 or as long as needed. If you do something, do it right the first time

And we are talking about the real 4×4 cars, the tough, rugged and strong all-rounders. Not an fancy all wheel drive audi/volvo/tesla/bmw for winter sports only. No, our e-Rovers convertion that can go through ditches, through 1 metre of water, pick up dead animals from the reserve parks, drive electric where there are no roads at all. All year long. Work loads that nature managers, governments, rescuers and the army have to do every day. Hard work with the car in any weather and on any surface. Every day. Safe and sturdy.

So out goes the engine, all 3 gearboxes and both axles. That was the basic idea, but we immediately saw all kinds of difficulties looming.

But difficulties are just fun and we just went on making designs. We continued engineering into 2 new swap lightweight electric powered axel/shafts, one front and one rear. To provide you to use green electricity only, an huge CO2 saving of almost 100 per cent every mile. All pollutants released during fuel combustion for driving are history with our set.

High efficiency is the second reason for our construction. 93% efficiency and by far the most interesting in costs to convert to electric. We have a special piece written to read for Governments and NGO’s. They are people, human beings, living in the same world as we do, buying food in the same supermarked, driving the same roads, live in the same neighbourhood and breathe the same air. Look for it.

In a 4×4 offroad car electric stuff is much easier to install than in a passenger car we discovered along the way. More space. And the pollution per km/mile for a 4×4 is 3x higher than in a passenger car: due to weight and lack of streamline, model bungalow. So the impact is much bigger to spare the world. It is faster & cheaper to convert 1,000 4×4 cars than 3,000 passenger cars for the same result right?

So e-Rovers developed a swap universal electric-drive system, the 4×4 car instantly feels like 280 bhp (double-horsepower). The curb-weight remains the same, having a lower centre of gravity it gives a better handling as a bonus. And selective high and low gear, as you have been used to. The discarded parts (475kg) weigh about as much as our electric axels set including 400km/250mile range batteries.

In the yellow circle is our rear e-motor (3-in-1 powerhouse), and we have one in front : a dual-motor design so all wheel drive. As you were used to. The whole swap EV-axles we construct completely new in aluminium in our factory:

Above in blue the 7th test motor mounted in a safety rack for demolition during test benching. After 260 hours of testing 25% above the calculated strength, without any wear and tear. The test was completed without damage.

Must be expensive

The prices are right here: € 34.000 for the 2 axles with the e-motors & electronics. The batteries are from € 9.000 to € 20.000 depends on your requirements. Further reading on this site we show a solid plan. Our prices are on the 1st page, with others you have to request them first by email and then you are shocked. Most financial gain this way to convert is in the quick conversion time, you don’t lose your car for months with dozens of hours of paid work somewhere far away for a long time. We will send you a complete set, your local garage will easily mount it.

All brands? By slightly changing the track width, the attachment of shock absorbers, brakes and rim bolt attachments, we came to a nice discovery: with small changes the EV-set fits every rugged 4×4, of any make or year of building. And those that will drive in the future, sold with still that dirty engine in it.

Those small changes are done in our dutch factory for your type of 4×4 car and year of manufacture. That’s not so difficult right? No rocket science. There is no need to bring the car to us is nice and easy for you. More on page Dealers. The price is not too bad. This makes it even more interesting as an investment in terms of payback time. That was not the intention but the result of good designs.

Governments

And very interesting change for governments, NGO’s or authorities worldwide to replace their polluting 4x4s to clean ones. Waiting for years to buy a strong electric 4×4 car ?? You don’t need a new car at all, you just need a 100% electric 4×4 car. And you already have it, paid for and driving within your organisation. Convert it to electric & clean and save 2/3 costs over its lifetime (TCO) as a bonus. Evaluate what you read: is it necessary to buy a new car ? We make series, we lease to, we take over your OEM contracts if necessary, do not wait.

Market value

At the end of development in 2024 we are today independent of any manufacturer. We send our e-sets Worldwide. Owners are a lot cheaper to drive electric & clean as a bonus. That’s where earning its investment back. Based on the TCO = total cost of ownership. Break even in 4 to 6 years. If you are not at all interested in the health of nature you can convert for your own wallet only.

All parts including electronics come from the Netherlands or at most from Europe. Politically sensible too and we help Europe move forward. Still a point of interest.

The 1st start

We have been thinking about, since 2015, how to cleverly convert our own fuel-powered 4×4 Land Rover 88, 109 and Defender, Range Rover V8 and Toyota Landcruiser into an electric-powered one. We have studied all the possibilities for one year: how ‘retrofitting’ fuel-driven 4×4 cars to electric. Not only good for the environment, but also for the driver’s wallet and cheaper to run we found out later.

Our way is by far the highest efficiency between the battery and the road: 93%. In comparison to other methods leaving all the 3 gearboxes in and the original axel including two differentials: max 60% efficiency. Result: we use smaller and less expensive batteries for the same range. And remember: all batteries are heavy, so less weight to carry. Less wear and tear in the car is the result.

Others just swap the combustion engine for an industrial electric motor, an awful lot of work and they leave all the resistance gear-parts in place and so they also carry all the extra weight for years. We dismantle that unnecessary 475kg. The others just add weight to the car, by just taking out the engine (175kg) and adding (470kg) electric stuff, and need to put all the batteries in the car. We build these batteries in the space freed up under the car and in the engine compartment.

An additional disadvantage is that the original parts cannot withstand the extra power of the electric motor at all and break down quickly. Therefore, they replace all those parts for stronger developed ones, so much more expensive parts. We call this: “putting the cart before the horse”. Not smart and extra expensive. Converting seems easy, but is not at all. Result is that we end up being cheaper to opt for an electric conversion decision.

CHANGE THE DRIVE NOT THE CAR is our e-Rovers slogan.

Even e-motors in the wheels are thought of, but then the whole car has to be rebuilt which is a huge job and very expensive. And do we need 600hp for a work horse? Of course not.

New Toyota or new Grenadier. All fits our e-Rovers set.

So enjoy reading all other pages, the most of the important points of interest you red. If you want extra background information, there are four more pages for you to read here. Please pass this site e-Rovers.org on as much as possible to like-minded people.

e-Rovers community

Sometimes we hear: “are you a green community?” If you read all the information here. NO, we defelop, produce and sell electric 4×4 drivetrains only (and battery boxes). But we do answer all the questions we got since 2021. That’s why we explain much more than just the commercial talk. Climate technologies are often more efficient and cheaper than fossil fuels. The world is changed.

We also explain here why there are needs to be a change in driving. Many customers ask us for a solution to a problem: will you still be able to go into town in five years? Already there are 65 cities in Europe where a 4×4 is banned due to pollution. Even a fairly brand new euro5 petrol Toyota Landcruiser V6 may soon be out of it.

All cities worldwide will follow Paris in time. Quicker as you bad-dream.

For Africa for example, another reason to switch to a different drive: with all that sun, there is suddenly a cheap and clean fuel: electricity to power the Land Rover or Toyota Landcruisers. Solar>battery>driving>clean>silent>powerful->cheaper. Keep the special built 4x4s, just change the drive yourself in 3 days.

You own the car, just change it to EV

Circularity is about 85% in our way of changing to electric driving, more futher on the site.

Weights

Actually, this part belongs under specs page, but we felt it was still important to explain this to a non-technical reader on page 1. Our electric motor weighs 76 kg, an original differential weighs 36 kg. Our aluminum axle weighs 21 kg less (than iron one) that leaves 19 kg additional unsprung weight. This is ok, after all a tuft of wet mud also weighs something like that. A change to aluminum rims instead of steel we reduce this to +6 kg in total. You can simply keep your original shock absorbers, brakes and springs/airsuspention. The handling remains exactly the same. In addition, more and more offroad tires are no longer re-inforced with a steel belt but with nylon, which again is lighter than steel.

Because we remove the fuel engine and all 3 gearboxes, radiator, tank etc. we use that 475kg of weightloss for 85kWh batteries (the long range package), we stay exactly the same curbweight as the original fuel car. With the small battery package we are even 150kg lighter than your original 4×4 car. A great result. (Kilogram to Pound: 1Kg=2.2Lbs)

One complicated design made but a lifetime benefit of a lighter and less expensive battery, giving a great range to drive and a smaller battery also charges faster”, explains our e-Rovers design team a bit more .

Note: we have a summary made by AI (Artificial Intelligence) on the last page (half way under Greenreporting). Actually, we are not in favour of AI, it uses too much electric power that we can better use elsewhere. And shouldn’t humans think for themselves? But you have to know what is going on in the world, so 1 experiment done with AI.

Dutch Circular Economy Association (NVCE)

We wants to show that it is serious about the circular economy. Our e-Rovers product is 80+% circular and 100% re-use at the end. Even the NoWoS lithium battery is 100% re-use. The future is for economical use of earth resources. (this national lobby association was founded on 20 March 2025 in Leeuwarden Friesland) www.change.inc/circulaire-economie

A lot of offroad fuel cars sadly driven by Governments & NGO’s today

If you have a vision of the future and know that the sustainable transition cannot wait? Whether you are just starting your journey as a change agent or already firmly in the saddle? And you feel resistance within your government or NGO, your employer? Question how we drive in 25 years, the answer is always: electric. So the question is when do we transition, not if ? It could be as soon as next month. Consider this goverment people and discuss in your team. Call us for a brainstorm.

We also lease and are manufacturer too (partnering). So in terms of warranty you will be fine. Better even, you are now clean government as an example to the citizens around you: “Citizens pay taxes to pay the government, to work for the community. It’s that simple.

A brandnew (converted by e-Rovers) electric Toyota 4×4 for € 75.000. Even less if building a large series at once for you. See pics below: for sale only in white. We respray in your colour for free. There are plenty left to convert EV:

Emissions

The average emissions of a 4×4 car with a fuel engine driving 15,000 kilometers (9,400 miles) annually , is over 6,600 kg of CO₂. More than tripple as much as a passenger car. For example, 1 liter of gasoline releases about 2,270 grams of CO₂ while burning 1 liter of diesel releases 2,600 grams of CO₂. A 4×4 car consumes about 1 liter of diesel/petrol every 9 km (5,5 miles). This is a lot of fuel and very polluting as you know by now. Note: there are about 1 million 4×4 cars on the road today. Every day. That’s a lot of pollution right? In addition to CO₂, there are many other pollutants released from combustion out of your car such as fine dust as particulate matter, NOx, methane and lead.

We are currently having professional parties calculate the exact impact of our product on reducing pollution. These calculation includes making (re)use of the 4×4 car, battery and the materials to do the conversion. We are also looking at making the electric power. Calculations now give a factor of 90% cleaner than fuel driving. An important monitoring point today is the calculation of saved pollution per vehicle (rating for the same work done). Especially the calculation of exact how much it makes in pollution if you convert your 4×4 car to electric. While building a new 4×4 car or converting what we do. More about this on the last page (GreenReporting) To be continued. And watch the movie about this at the bottom.

Below a yellow Nissan pick-up used by a government department we convert to electric vehicle (EV) of these, there are hundreds:

Gears eating energy

Gears only take power from the battery for nothing. Many gears are spinning around, all consuming energy. Halfway down the Challenge & Why Electric page we discuss in detail the gearbox, with figures attached. A fuel 4×4 car will have 3 gearboxes spinning around eating energy every mile…

Invest in the future, get involved

There are millions fuel-powered polluting 4x4s driving around the world today. Within Europe alone there are 311,000 diesel fuming 4×4 cars driving around. Half of them are going to the scrap yard in the next 15 years, forbidden to drive. The other half have can be converted to electric. We have a lot of questions from USA, Canada, NZ, Australia, Africa from everywhere for our EV sets. There are a lot 4x4s dirty fuel driving around the world today and also counting. You come across them on the roads every day, just look around.

That is why e=Rovers has become interesting for investors, because we can sell our sets still 30 year continuous from now. From 1965 to 2050 or as long as needed.

Sometimes an owner tries to escape banning by replacing the diesel with petrol and a gas installation on top. This is actually more expensive than switching to 100% electric right away and within 10 years this trick will also be banned. You pay more road tax and the high maintenance remains on gearboxes, leaking oil and broken differentials. That history just stays.

Fuel burning is slowly coming to an end, whether we like it or not

Home batteries in your car

“I see the home battery as an indispensable part of the energy transition.” Quote Reyer Gerlagh, professor of Environmental Economics at Tilburg University. He sees a big role for both battery parks and home batteries: the former at the national level, the latter at the neighborhood level. Households will switch more to stand-alone power plants. No longer dependent on public power. We do bi-directional, we connect an e-Rover to your home. Fuel for free to drive around clean.

Older and newer 4×4 to convert to Ev

At the forefront

The Netherlands are one of the most densely populated areas in the world and below sea level. We have too many cars, cows, pigs, chickens, iron- and chemical plants and tulips. Perhaps we feel the need doing something about global warming a bit more, even though we are a very small country. The sea is comming up because of heating up the earth … We are going to produce and supply these sets world wide, because we know:

There is no Planet B …

From the editors

Even though we produce everything in the Netherlands, Europe. The site is in English UK, because there is a growing interest in converting to electric World Wide.

Should the English rattle a bit, we’ll do our best … We use deepl sometimes.
