Initial idea: a fuel-powered 4×4 car in the jungle is no longer future-proof. However, we thought that the greatest green effect would be in the busy, populated world and governments should take the lead in reducing emissions; more on this later.

We would like to take you on a journey through a story. Let’s start at the beginning: how to convert a 4×4 car into a 100% Electric Vehicle (EV).

The Dutch e-Rovers company specialise in converting to EV for robust and indestructible 4×4 vehicles, which are often used for demanding work in challenging terrain. Where there are often no paved roads at all. Actually, for all brands of 4×4 vehicles, both those already on the road and those fuelcars yet to be manufactured, hybrids too; more on this later.

With our bold-on set, all real offroad cars can be converted to 100% electric. In a few days, regardless of where you reside in the world. This set has 150 hp more than the standard fuel version and a lot of extra torque; more on this later.

Clear design approach

We developed the most logical way to convert your 4×4 to electric: “make the two axles electrically driven as separate components, and you’re done”. Marketing: send it around the world and anyone can easily install it. Charge and Go:

Upcycle the truck in front of you

This makes a huge difference in the production (and pollution) of new building raw materials, savings of over 85%. We manufacture new ready-made electric conversion kits, shipped all over the world. And this costs 34.000 euro for our 2 e-axles. And (re-used?) battery packs ranging from 8.000 to 18.000 euro for sufficient driving time (18K is for 400km/250miles). These complete aluminium axles, with the electric motors already installed, can be easily fitted using your own shock absorbers, brakes and any air suspension or ABS.

We show the costs right away, so you don’t have to chase them up and end up with huge quotations. We thought that anyone could do it for a lot of money, so we decided to take a different approach. And that’s what we’ve been doing since the beginning of this project in 2015: initiating IMPACT for a cleaner world. “It is smarter for impact on pollution to supply 1,000 sets per year, than to manually convert 12 cars per year, and then it is also much cheaper per set, that is our commitment to a cleaner world”, says the initiator of this project.

Let us begin our story with the basics of driving and fuel consumption

Every car consumes a fuel (diesel, petrol (gasoline), gasGPL, HVO, H2), or electricity per kilometre/mile driven. Whether it is fuel burning in a 4-stoke engine or electricity to power the (magnetic-) electric motors. Did you know that an off-road 4×4 vehicle consumes three times as much fuel as a normal car? After all, the energy required to move any vehicle per distance travelled is basicly the same, whether it runs on fuel or electricity. That amount of energy is measured in kW per km/mile (kilowatt). An important observation to start the basics.

So the fuel comes from the tank (the website features a video showing how we obtain fuel), and the electricity from the battery. So far so good. That’s where the e-Rovers difference lies: how can we use as little kilowatts per km/mile as possible? We figured it out, you can read it here.

We focus since 2015 the entire engineering on consuming as little kW as possible per kilometre/mile. Then less electric storage is needed, meaning a smaller battery. And fewer batteries are cheaper than needing more batteries. And fewer batteries are much lighter to carry to cover the same distance, namely at least 400 km/250 miles. e-Rovers basic range for a heavy 4×4 car or truck. Weighing over 2 tons with the streamlined shape of a bungalow. Not bad.

As a result we can maintain the original weight of your 4×4 car or even make it lighter. This lighter in turn makes for a better off-road vehicle than your fuel one. Advantages only.

These are the key factors that enable e-Rovers to offer you a truly unique electric conversion set. Keep your beloved car, just install a clean electric drive in it, often powered by your solar panels. Independent in this strange world as a bonus.

Eliminating all internal resistance by driving the wheel directly in the center. We will discuss this on other pages. This step allows us to eliminate all three gearboxes in your car. We remove everything (includig the engine offcourse). Our electric motor drives the wheels directly from the center, where the differential used to be located in the old axle, front and rear. Our entire electric drive system, with high and low driving modes and a Torsen differential, is located within the yellow circle.

This step allows us to mount the batteries in the freed-up space in heated, sturdy aluminum boxes. Safe under and not in the car. All space remains available as usual.

We developed and build an axel-integrated-electric-motor set. We sell only sets for rugged 4×4 cars. Not for show cars 4×4 for wintersports only or show driving around the block. Workhorses only we call them. Thise cars (trucks) are shown everywhere on the site. Real IMPACT for a cleaner world we looked for.

Make the world more circular economy and become less polluting

Do it now, before it’s almost too late, were our thoughts in 2015. And not only existing 4×4 cars, but also the new fuel 4×4 cars that are yet to be manufactured and will need to be an electric vehicle (EV) in the near future. The market for electric convertions is growing every year. Hybrid driving is also doomed to end in time. We developed for all brands off-road vehicles, not only for Land Rovers.

Plug in with e-Rovers, because the near furture is electric-powered driving. Charged from your own solar-roof, no more visits to the petrol station, independent of anyone else and, as a bonus, much cheaper to drive (measured in TCO). Yes, we are Dutch and on the coin…

The best way to stop polluting is to stop polluting

It seems simple, but it isn’t. How are you going to drive without fuel? Help restore nature without compromising on robust offroad driving, comfort, costs or convenience? If you need to continue using your sturdy and rugged 4×4 car for work and/or pleasure and you don’t want (or cannot) downgrade to an ordinary EV passenger car (the same as your neighbours?). Keep 4×4 driving where there are no roads at all? You want to keep doing what you are used to do?

“We understand that, we wanted the same thing and that is how we started this adventure in 2015”, explains the team initiator, my first 4×4 was a Land Rover 88 Series 3 in 1979.

But there are more brands

This brand new Toyota Landcruiser above is still for sale in the Euro 3 (diesel or petrol polluting-) version with a consumption of 20 litres per 100 kilometres/60 miles). But this above car is zero miles driven. You can guess the e-Rovers thoughts: convert into an EV with our kit. Convert it immediately and remove the new powertrain right away. Buy an EV Toyota Landcruiser straight away. Bam.

Costs: including the new Toyota, this this can be done for less than 78.000 euro. More on this later.

Public authorities: come on with your orders

That rugged electric4x4 car you need is not jet for sale. That market is too small for car manufacturers at the moment. But now you have a choice. Keep doing both: start driving clean and rugged off-road. And it’s even cheaper. Is it also cheaper for the government in these times of tight budgets? Call us for a project. There are subsidies available worldwide. (governments start-up funds).

“We often forget that governments are not untouchable glass buildings, but people like you and me who stand next to each other in the supermarket. We live in the same world that we all pollute. Do you realise this, civil servant? Then take action now and start the discussion to launch a demo project in your team”, explains the head of R&D.

How we do it

How we convert to electric, sets us apart from all other EV converters in the World.

The entire drive train is removed and we connect our electric motor directly to the wheels, in our case to all four wheels with two electric motors. But the basic of the axle(s) remains original. We have been able to build it so lightly that the unsprung weight has not increased.

During the design process, we came up with this alternative method, which will be used far into the future, with big smiles on our faces. We can also mount the e-motor on the chassis fixed and work with short drive shafts, as every modern 4×4 car has nowadays. How we did this exactly remains our secret. A little hint: our 3-in-1 electric motor has two output shafts. This electric motor was not available for purchase anywhere (we searched for it for over a year), so we developed it ourselves and manufacture it in-house in the Netherlands.

Now we are also completely independent. A comforting feeling in this strange world, isn’t it? More on this later for investors, sharefunding or others with a financial interest in e-Rovers.

What we need

In basic a sustainable investing is shifting from a moral label to measurable risk management; you can simply achieve stable profits. Old industry without a green label, making no profits in the furture. You have to move forewards. As an investor, you no longer need to be a vegetarian, clean-minded futurist to participate. Sticking to the mission, just when things got exciting

Since 2015, we have been working to resolve all technical issues and develop this impressive drive system. Furthermore, we are able to utilise used batteries from hospitals and/or data centres. More on this later.

We are also making an EV- set for the new Jeep below (Stellantis) and in fact for all the vehicles you will find on the site. More sets will be added, for example for the heavier Unimog or the 4×4 Iveco (FTP) and army vehicles.

Dealers

We supply you with a complete set: a tailormade set for your type and brand. The track width of the axle, the attachment of brakes and linking remain the same as original. We adjust this at the factory for your type of 4×4. Adjusting these axles isn’t rocket science, just simple metalwork. More on other pages.

Not for sale today

As you might know, there is still no powerful electric 4×4 car available on the market. For rough terrain, for daily use in mud and if there are no roads at all. And a long range to drive electric. That will take years because all car manufacturers (OEM) do not have the funds for it; the market share is simply too small to cover these development costs. And the e-technology cannot be compared to an ordinary road car. The technology currently in use is simply too weak, with too many sensors. In the mud, of course not, watertight?

So a basic (hybrid-) electric 4×4, such as Tesla Model Y, BMW iX, Kia EV9, Audi or Volvo, is not a sturdy all-rounder, capable of driving through a ditch or pulling a dead deer out of the back, for daily use by authorities who have to plough through impassable, heavy terrain on a daily basis. Where there are no roads at all. Which all have been using for fuel-burning 4x4s since 1965, right? As the 110 Defender TD5 below or Toyota Landcruiser above.

Or going on safari or game-parks in Africa: if the car is breaking down, with lions and hippos all around. You can now easy convert your car to 100% electric rugged and safe driving. Battery Electric Vehicle is the product description (BEV). We guarantee a reliable off-roader that will always bring you home. Your only concern is to keep an eye on the charge level. That’s all. (that was also the case with the fuel in the tank, wasn’t it?)

The start

We thought a lot about how to develop an electric conversion for a fuel burning 4×4 car. As smart (rapid conversion) and rugged as possible. And not expensive, because we’re Dutch… Anyone can build something for a lot of money, right? And not just for Land Rovers, but for all brands. That suddenly makes the market enormous, worldwide… We already mentioned this briefly above: this market is growing every day.

We can address many different mobility issues with this single e-Rovers electric platform, to switch to go green. The development is done. And for many governments as showed above the rescue ones and all other public services.

Other EV-converters mostly bold an electric motor onto the existing (three-) gearboxes and retain the old stuff and mostly worn-out driveline. So just bolting an electric motor onto the gearbox is not enough; that’s just the beginning. More on this later.

This site is not only a story to persuade you to buy our product.

It is an explanation of the whole process of why it is necessary to do and difficult to convert your 4×4 car to electric. UpCycling is the smartest and best circulair way to get today an electric car en do not use a lot of new digging materials. Do not wait for manufacturers. We want impact to get greener faster. The more fuming diesels (and petrol) 4×4 cars we can swap to electric the better for our world. (and for your wallet…)

Governments change please

A main focus from e-Rovers is converting all government 4×4 cars/trucks and pick-ups to electric. Governments are far too slow to adapt. They are purchasing two new fuel-powered 4×4 vehicles today moneywise, whereas with us, you could convert four 4×4 vehicles to clean electric for the same price. The cars you already own, they are parked right in front of you at the other side of your window. Yes, of course, we also do yellow pick-ups.

Saving on the extraction (digging) of raw materials with us, do you realise that? Building a circular economy is what we need to do. Making money by greening the world. The world should transition to fewer animals, fewer farming but generating more biodiversity in farming and fewer low-paid jobs. Not drill-baby-drill. This does not contribute to the economy. The conversion to the new world does contribute to economies. Make profit. Deep down, you are aware of this.

PLUG-IN

Africa is currently very enthusiastic about our approach to conversion. We are building a network in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. Other countries will follow. Connect.

We offer in Africa a clean way to quickly convert old diesel 4×4 cars that are reaching the end of their technical lifetime (500.000km) into electric vehicles in all those countries. There is plenty of sunshine and solar energy is already available. We are also happy to work with European solar manufacturers, such as Triple Solar.

All these vehicles can be serviced locally. We ship the e-sets worldwide with instructions and video support when needed. Plug and play.

Stop buying fuels and think about your wallet

From a financial point of view, it is today cheaper to purchase and drive an electric (converted-) vehicle rather than one with a combustion dirty engine. When you consider the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership.) Fortunately, the notion that it would be costly is now a thing of the past.

This calculation is simple: your 4×4 car consumes 1 litre of diesel or petrol per 8 to 11 kilometres, you know how many kilometres/miles you will drive per year, and your car will last 15 years or more. Then you will spend twice as much money as you would now to convert your car. And then there is road tax and other taxes if you continue to drive a fuel-powered car. And don’t forget to factor in maintenance costs. An EV does not require maintenance, except for tyres and sometimes brake pads. (Slowing down gives you power back to the battery, so those brakes will last forever).

For us it turned out to be easier to make new axle(s) that fits perfectly and are tailormade. This also works faster for you and is therefore cheaper in terms of labour. Gives a quick swap-time as a result. Only the costs of your local garage are added. And (re-used-) batteries are becoming cheaper every day nowadays. Today, 10 minutes for every 100 kilometres/60 miles driven. And charging speeds are increasing.

Started quietly

To be honest, we had problems with our design. The biggest problem we encountered was that such a strong & small & reliable electric-motor did not exist, it was not for sale anywhere. We tucked away every nook and cranny and we turned every stone. That’s the reason no brand has implemented this idea we realised. Because developing such electric motor is very expensive.

And yet we did it. No overheads, no large teams, just both feet on the ground and getting things done.

Now that we have tested the 7th evo developments since the beginning (evolution and progression). The entire package is ready to roll. Because we cannot bear anymore the high costs for the first series of 50 axels. Until now, we have had to do everything since 2015 with our own money, without a bank or investor. We design and build things; we are techies. Finding sufficient financing is a different game. We are honest about that. But we are ready and are no longer burning money. Ready for production. Shares are available for investors. “Jump on the running offroad horse” we say.

We are also looking into investing in the construction of two demo cars, but these are, of course, extremely expensive. If we can build the series (50x), we will arrive at the prices listed above (and on the prices and specs page).

There is something else of interest for you investor below: we will also be converting fuel cars that are yet to be manufactured over the next 30 years. The market is growing by the day. It is a stable and growing global market.

“There is a fundamental question behind this: should we scrap those millions of fuel-guzzling 4×4 cars, or can we do something better with them than scrap them over the next 15 years?” says the innitiator.

Batteries

No reliable EV (Electric Vehicle) without reliable batteries. So we investigated since 2017 all kinds of batteries. New ones, different brands, and re-used lithium (iron) batteries and even re-used from e-bicycles the last year. The cells are almost the same you know? We focus on these today. But the choice is yours.

Where are those batteries?

They fit under the 4×4 car, leaving you with plenty of space inside the car. We also think it’s much safer. So we have developed an one size (fits all) strong aluminium boxes in which the cells (packs) are arranged. This “standard” box fits under any rugged 4×4, inbetween the strong chassis, so you can choose one box or more, depending on your usage/range to drive daily. We can fit between one and five boxes in one car. We do pre-heat these box(es) in winter time when charging.

These power-packs (boxes) are located in the same place where the three gearboxes and transfer case used to be. What we dismantled, including the engine, weighed minimal 475 kg. We thought, let’s get rid of it, useless ballast for an electric car. We want to use as little power as possible per 100 km, remember?

The space to the road has even increased! Another advantage of removing the complete old drive system. And more 4×4 fun, because we have more torque-power, have become lighter and have more ground clearance. The maximum sideways angle of inclination has also increased.

Why all brands?

We discovered (with a smile) during developments that only minor adjustments make our design can be tailor made for all 4×4 brands. Because only the track width and attachment of the brakes and shock absorbers are mounted a bit differently. That’s no rocket science.

If there is no rigid axle, we can also provide independently suspended drive with our e-drive with short drive shafts, as in all modern 4×4 cars. We can even provide two different types in one car (such as pick-up trucks: rigid back & independantly in front)

We want impact

There is something else about e-Rovers that is important to mention: we have opted for an easy-to-install EV-axel-set that can be mounted anywhere in the world. Because we don’t want to clean up only 25 cars a year, but 250 or even more. Every year. There are 2 million dirty fuel burning 4x4s on the road today. These offroad cars pollute three times more than a normal 2 wheel fuel car? So the impact is even bigger. And Impact is what matters to us.

Not every all wheel drive car is the same

Ofcourse there are some 4×4 electric cars on the market today, but those are for winter sports or good acceleration grip. Or show around the block. There are no 4×4 EVs sold on the market today that are made for really rugged work, when there are only bad roads or no roads at all. Workhorses as we see them and used for many years.

And let’s be honest, driving such a cool rugged car is awesome, and now it’s electric as a bonus. We do need indestructible 100% electric 4x4s all over the world, not only for Europe, Africa, Canada or America. For outbanned work, fire brigade, highway assistance, many authorities, rescue, hunters and beach lifeguards. And finally, for your horse-drawn trailer or your nature trips in beautiful areas in your rugged offroader. As you are used to. The past

My offroader years ago on the Dutch island of Terschelling, and yes, I was already a member of the dutch RR-trust in 1986 with my first V-8 Range Rover (P38). We now have a team of six people developing in the Netherlands. We are not a garage or a restorer, but we supply kits to quickly convert your 4×4 to 100% battery-electric. Prepared for the future in this strange world we live in today.

Future as we see it

A circular world in progress. The e-Rovers philosophy: you save a lot of new digged materials by converting your 4×4 car that is parked outside, do not purchase new, re-use it.

e-Rovers is not a community

Sometimes we hear: “are you a green community?” NO, we develop, design and sell these sets in a business model and make electric 4×4 drivetrains only (and battery boxes).

Why such a long story above? Because we do try to answer questions here we got since the beginning. We like to provide you with insights into the electric conversion issues. That’s why we explain much more here than just the blabla commercial talk.

Others

Various methods we have been seen all over. Many other electric 4×4 car converters use an ordinary electric motor; easy and cheap to buy, but not really suitable for electric powering or mounted inside the car-axel. Often not to placed something in the car, for example, quickly grabbed at the gearbox. Keep the old drivetrain intact, carry along many gears. These easy to buy e-motors are widely used in industry; for dollies, or conveyor belts in a hall, for a lift in a building … or they install old Tesla drives for example or the Chinese stuff.

All these electric motors rev (revolutions) much too high to drive the large offroader wheels 1 to 1 and need the many gears to reduce this. Eat power away for nothing. Or these e-motors are just to heavy, to big, not watertight etc. Or others build in-wheel-motors and have to develop the entire suspension, shock absorbers and brakes from scratch. That costs a fortune and it is impossible to deliver 250 or more per year. Nice but no impact.

At the forefront

Why Dutch? The Netherlands in Europe are one of the most densely populated areas in the world and below sea level in central Europe. We have too many cars, cows, pigs, chickens, iron- and chemical plants and tulips. Perhaps we feel the need doing something about global warming a bit more, even though we are a very small country. The sea is comming up because of heating up the earth. And we are allready below sea-level. Our motivation.
