The e-Rovers philosophy: renovate to an offroad electric vehicle (EV).

To make the world more circular. The best way is go electric, help restore nature without compromising on comfort, price or convenience. If you want to continue using your sturdy and rugged 4×4 car for work or pleasure and you don’t want to downgrade to an ordinary EV passenger car, the same as your neighbours.

And then never drive off-road again? You’ll miss that, but now you have a choice. Keep doing both: start driving clean and off-road. And it’s even cheaper too? That is precisely what this site is about, with extensive explanations of the background of e-convertion.

Keep your car, it’s already parked outside. But improve your car. Convert it into a fully-fledged EV (electric vehicle) in just 3 days. That means removing the fossil fuel combustion engine, petrol tank and all energy-consuming gears (needed for 4×4 offroad driving). Start installing our 2 strong electric e-Rovers axels. Including all batteries in the space that becomes available now, in a sturdy waterproof boxes (easy swap only). This is not only good for the environment, but also for the driver’s wallet, called the total cost of ownership (TCO).

Not for sale today: a rugged 4×4 EV

As you might know, there is still no powerful electric 4×4 car available on the market. For rough terrain, for daily use in mud and if there are no roads at all. A long range drive. That will take years because all car manufacturers (OEM) do not have the funds for it; the market share is simply too small to cover the costs. And the e-technology cannot be compared to an ordinary human car.

So a regular EV 4×4, such as Kia, Audi or Volvo, is not an all-rounder, capable of driving through a ditch or pulling a dead deer out of the back, for authorities who have to plough through impassable, heavy terrain on a daily basis. Where there are no roads at all. Which we have been using for fuel-burning 4x4s since 1965, right? As the 110 Defender TD5 below:

The start

We thought hard about how to develop a smart electric conversion for a fuel burning 4×4 car. As smart (rapid conversion) and rugged as possible. And not expensive, we’re Dutch you know… Anyone can build something for a lot of money, right? And not just for Land Rovers, but for all brands. That suddenly makes the market enormous, worldwide…

We are the only ones in the world who supply this smart way of EV 4×4 conversions.

You can’t get any closer to the wheel. Skiped all resistances in the driveline, resulting in the highest efficiency possible: almost no loss in the e-drive. And because all fuel stuff out, gives us the space for the batteries inside the chassis, between the frame-rails.

We can address many different mobility issues with this single e-Rovers platform to go green: inside the yellow ball is our invention. From there, we go directly to the centre of the wheels, one to the left wheel, one to the right wheel.

One drive to the left wheel and one drive to the right wheel. The rear axle is shown here, but the same applies to the front axle. In short, we supply two yellow balls in two new aluminium axles to drive all four wheels simultaneously.

Conversely, we thought that if you can drive the wheels directly in a straight line, you no longer need the entire fuel & gears-drive train. A major advantage is the quick conversion, but we also eliminate a lot of unnecessary resistance throughout the entire drive system. (engine to wheels). They only generate 35% loss and extra weigh of 475 kg. So we can get by with 35% fewer batteries and remain at the same original street (curb-) weight. No one else has thought of that either.

This approach saves a significant amount of labour hours and reduces our battery requirements by 35%, which together makes a considerable financial difference. We have noticed that the entire original drive system weighs 475 kg. And that is going out.

Other EV-converters mostly bold an electric motor onto the existing (three-) gearboxes and retain the old stuff and mostly worn-out driveline. So just bolting an electric motor onto the gearbox is not enough; that’s just the beginning.

More power on the wheels

Our e-drive axels gives you twice as much power (Hp) and three times more force (torque) from a standstill. The batteries are stored in special strong casings between the frame-rails. These can be filled with all brands of cells. New or re-used and pre-heated in winterime. Bi-directional connected to your home as an option. Charging 10 minutes for every 100km/60miles. We handle 4 boxes between the frame rails under your car to have a safe range of 400km/250miles. More range to come.

Governments change please

Main focus is converting all governments to electric-4×4, governments are far too slow to adapt. They are purchasing two new fuel-powered 4×4 vehicles today moneywise, whereas with us, you could convert four 4×4 vehicles to clean electric for the same price. The cars you already own, they are parked right in front of you at the other side of your window. Yes, of course, we also do pick-ups.

You are also saving on the extraction (digging) of a great deal of materials, do you realise that? Building a circular economy is what we need to do. Making money by greening the world. The world should transition to fewer animals, fewer farming but generating more biodiversity in farming and fewer low-paid jobs. These do not contribute to the economy. Transitioning to the new world does contribute to economies. Deep down, you are aware of this.

We often forget that governments are not untouchable glass buildings, but people like you and me who stand next to each other in the supermarket. We live in the same world that we all pollute. Or Africa is currently very enthusiastic about our approach to conversion. We are building a network in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. Other countries will follow.

We offer in Africa a clean way to quickly convert old diesel 4×4 cars that are reaching the end of their technical lifetime (500.000km) into electric vehicles in all those countries. There is plenty of sunshine and solar energy is already available. We are also happy to work with European solar manufacturers, such as Triple Solar.

Stop buying fuels. From a financial point of view, it is today simply cheaper to purchase an electric (converted-) vehicle rather than one with a combustion dirty engine. When you consider the TCO. (Total Cost of Ownership)

Because our e-axles are mounted at the original points and we keep the original shock absorbers, brakes and attachments, we have no re-inspection problems when converting from a fuel vehicle to an electric vehicle. That means also no problems with your government inspections, your registration number or plates, now changed to an Electric Vehicle (EV) now. (RDW/TüV).

The total cost and work to do

You purchase two electric axles for € 34.500, the largest battery pack for € 18.000 (400km/250miles range). A small battery pack for € 4.500 (100km/60miles range).

It turned out to be easier to make new axle(s) that fits perfectly and tailormade. This also works faster and is therefore cheaper in terms of labour. A quick swap-time as a result. Only the costs of your local garage are added. And (re-used-) batteries are becoming cheaper every day nowadays. And charging speeds are increasing.

Started quietly

To be honest, we had problems with our design. The biggest problem we encountered was that such a strong & small & reliable electric-motor did not exist, it was not for sale anywhere. We tucked away every nook and cranny. We turned every stone. That’s the reason no brand has implemented this idea we realised. Because developing such electric motor is very expensive.

And yet we did it. No overheads, no large teams, started in 2016, just both feet on the ground and getting things done.

Now that we have tested the 7th evo developments since 2016, the entire package is ready to roll. Because we cannot bear the high costs for the first series of 50. Until now, we have had to do everything with our own money, without a bank or investor. We design and build things; we are techies. Finding financing is a different game. We are honest about that. But we are ready and are no longer burning money. Ready for production. Shares are available for investors.

We are also looking into investing in the construction of two demo cars, but these are, of course, extremely expensive. If we can build the series (50x), we will arrive at the prices listed above (and on the prices and specs page).

There is something else of interest for you investor below: we will also be converting fuel cars that are yet to be manufactured over the next 30 years. The market is growing by the day.

Batteries

No reliable EV (Electric Vehicle) without reliable batteries we told above. So we investigated since 2017 all kinds of batteries. New ones, different brands, and re-used lithium (iron) batteries and even re-used from e-bicycles the last year. The cells are almost the same you know? We focus on these today. But the choice is yours.

Where are those batteries?

They fit under the 4×4 car, leaving you with plenty of space inside the car. We also think it’s much safer. So we have developed an one size (fits all) strong aluminium boxes in which the cells (packs) are arranged. This “standard” box fits under any rugged 4×4, inbetween the strong chassis, so you can choose one box or more, depending on your usage/range to drive daily. We do pre-heat these box(es) in winter time when charging.

The space to the road has even increased! Another advantage of removing the old drive system. We can handle more mud on tour. We can drive where there are no roads at all. Through wet ditches, put a dead deer in your car, cut trees, which is what we used to do when working off-road and managing country estates since 1960. We will continue with this job, but now using electricity, clean and quiet.

Why all brands?

We discovered (with a smile) during developments that only minor adjustments make our design can be tailor made for all 4×4 brands. Because only the track width and attachment of the brakes and shock absorbers are mounted a bit differently. It’s not rocket science. The reason you can rebuild/reset all the parts that hold the axle under a 4×4 rugged car.

All new 4×4 cars yet to be made are converted Ev later

We also smiled that all new sold 4×4 cars today and next month are again fuel burning bastards and need probably 100% electric too converted in the near furture. This surprise popped up after marketing search. Most OEM manufacturers sell brand-new offroaders equipped with the dirty fuel engines and all gearboxes. Only 10% are (mild-) hybride, short driving 100km/60miles electric, than the fuel pollutions kicks in again.

So, we are not only modifying existing 4×4 cars, but later on we will also modifying 4×4 cars that are manufactured the coming 20 years. When they are no longer allowed to go into the city or areas where many people live. Such as the orange pick-up below: fuel driven, made in 2026, euro5 or 6. Yes, we also do pick-ups, rigid rear axle and in-crankcase differential front drive.

We want impact

There is something else about e-Rovers that is important to mention. We have opted for an easy-to-install EV-axel-set that can be mounted anywhere in the world. Because we don’t want to clean up only 25 cars a year, but 250 or even more. There are 2 million dirty fuel burning 4x4s on the road today. These offroad cars pollute three times more than a normal 2 wheel fuel car? So the impact is even bigger. And Impact is what matters to us.

You can talk about impact, but we like to quantify that impact so that everyone can see exactly how much of a difference you make when you start driving electric. What exactly is the pollution produced by a 4×4 car during its lifetime?

Burnig emissions Land Rover Defender TD5: burns 314gr/km, x 12,1 lt every 100km/60miles. Multiplied for 15.000km a year per car, multiplied by 20 years per car, multiplied the quantity of 4×4 vehicles driving around here in the Netherlands, emit millions of tonnes for the world. We calculated that fuel/emmisions consumption by 4×4 vehicles in the Netherlands alone causes as much pollution as twice the annual emissions of New York City.

And the atmosphere is only 200 km/125 miles high, do you realise that? You can cycle that distance in just 6 hours, such a thin layer.

Not every all wheel drive car is the same

Ofcourse there are 4×4 electric cars on the market today, but those are for winter sports or good acceleration grip. Or show. There are no 4×4 EVs on the market today that are made for really rugged work, when there are bad roads or no roads at all. Workhorses as we see them and used reliable for years.

And let’s be honest, driving such a cool rugged car is awesome, and now it’s electric too. We do need indestructible 100% electric 4x4s all over the world, not only for Europe, Africa, Canada or America. For work, fire brigade, highway assistance, many authorities, rescue, hunters and beach lifeguards. And finally, for your horse-drawn trailer or your nature trips in beautiful areas in your rugged offroader. As you are used to. Last page we do many roof-tents pics.

Future as we see it

A circular world in progress. The e-Rovers philosophy: you save a lot of new digged materials by converting your 4×4 car that is parked outside.

You re-use 85% or more of the same car. We create a tailormade-set for all cars that have their photo on the entire site.

Such as the new Toyota Landcruiser Prado or a JLR-Land Rover Defender or Grenadier. All our convertion sets are tailormade and send out to you, worldwide. With clear conversion instructions. And video meeting assistance if required.

Grenadier uses BMW diesel engines, Italian axles and a gearboxes from ZF.

e-Rovers is not a community

Sometimes we hear: “are you a green community?” If you read all the information.

NO, we develop, design and sell these sets in a business model and make electric 4×4 drivetrains only (and battery boxes).

Why such a long story above? Because we do try to answer questions here we got since 2021. We like to provide you with insights into the electric conversion issues. That’s why we explain much more here than just the commercial talk.

Others

Various methods we have been seen all over. Many electric 4×4 car converters use an ordinary electric motor; easy and cheap to buy, but not really suitable for electric powering or mounted inside the car-axel. Often not to placed something in the car, for example, quickly grabbed at the gearbox. Keep the old drivetrain intact, carry along many gears. These easy to buy e-motors are widely used in industry; for dollies, or conveyor belts in a hall, for a lift in a building … or they install old Tesla drives for example or the Chinese stuff.

All these electric motors rev (revolutions) much too high to drive the large offroader wheels 1 to 1 and need the many gears to reduce this. Eat power away for nothing. Or these e-motors are just to heavy, to big, not watertight etc. Or others build in-wheel-motors and have to develop the entire suspension, shock absorbers and brakes from scratch. That costs a fortune and it is impossible to deliver 250 or more per year. Nice but no impact.

An the end, we came up with our solutions. We design and produce a strong lightweight 3-in-1 electro motor and have become independent of any supplier. Because we have become a manufacturer today ourselves, this took 8 years to achieve. That’s nice in today’s strange world.

At the forefront

Why Dutch? The Netherlands are one of the most densely populated areas in the world and below sea level in central Europe. We have too many cars, cows, pigs, chickens, iron- and chemical plants and tulips. Perhaps we feel the need doing something about global warming a bit more, even though we are a very small country. The sea is comming up because of heating up the earth. And we are allready below sea-level. Our extra motivation.
